The United Nations, in collaboration with the “One Day on Earth” online community, is preparing for what will be the first ever global screening of a film that includes footage that was shot in every country on the planet on a single day. The movie will be screened in every country of the world on the same day in late February 2012.

Working closely with the United Nations global network of country offices, the producers plan to screen the film in both theatres and venues of cultural and historic significance.

One Day on Earth produced the film in partnership with the United Nations, more than 60 non-profit organizations and a growing online community of over 19,000 filmmakers. On 10 October 2010 (10/10/10), the One Day on Earth community, including over 95 United Nations country offices, filmed in every country of the world, capturing both the joys and the struggles of everyday life.

“While the film identifies the common threads that connect us all, it also celebrates the diversity that is a part of our unique individual nature,” says Kyle Ruddick, Founder and Director of One Day on Earth. “The film contains a message of hope, but also a strong call to action for positive change on issues that face both the global and local communities.”

“Our partnership with One Day on Earth has grown from an experimental film project to a collaborative communications movement. This type of large scale event was a natural evolution for this partnership.” Kiyo Akasaka, United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Communications and Public Information.

“It is an honour to be the first film screened at this magnitude,” said Brandon Litman, Co-founder and Executive Producer of One Day on Earth. “As a grassroots project pitched to the United Nations a year and a half ago, this truly shows how an idea can grow into a global experience.”

last year dave rastovich & his fellow surfers for cetaceans pirates made their way down the east coast of australia on the smallest sea going vessels you would ever see! the mission: transparentsea  is an awareness campaign aimed at highlighting coastal environmental issues, with particular attention given to cetaceans (whales & dolphins) & the waters they inhabit.

the first journey (byron bay to bondi, australia, 2009) successfully highlighted the plight of humpback whales & the threat faced by japanese whaling fleets.

the second (california, october, 2011) traces the southern migration of the california grey whale from santa barbara to baja, mexico with an emphasis on engaging key coastal community groups & drawing awareness to the causes they support.

they are underway on the california coast & are stopping at some spots along the way to raise awareness & get you involved!  tonight the crew is heading over to the malibu inn where just a few weeks back these guys premiered a film made from the last journey, Minds in the Water.  little hobo project & ashleigh mannix had a visit & delivered some tunes to support the cause.

sicky dicky, had a live webcast going backstage & miss mannix played a little tune in honor of rasta & the other dedicated members of the group. enjoy.

last month brought us ashleigh mannix‘s september ‘n california tour.  from hotel cafe in hollywood, harvelle’s in santa monica to hermosa, san diego & of course mexico!  ashleigh seemed to fall in love with california as many young independent musos do.

she had to say:  what a trip!! spent a weekend on a yacht in catalina…got some inkage and my fortune told at venice beach… saw james blake &  jimmy kimmel in hollywood… drank tequila, ate lobster & got it lots of trouble in mexico… went shopping on rodeo drive…lost my passport & found it again… gonna miss you california! we’ve had an amazing september together!! xxx

quite ironically we ran into lost atlas filmmaker, kai neville, on the indies trader iv just off lances right on sipora.  he was shooting his latest project with some crazy kids like jamie o’brien, adriano de souza, bruce irons & oh just a few other ridiculously amazing surf boys aboard the absolutely gorgeous vessel.  highlight of the encoutner, bruce irons flare barrels.  click for video – a must see!

this week lost atlas will be screening in sydney with a special screening of the surfaid’s behind the palms sneak preview.  can not wait!

we met david maurice smith over well prepared sangria in a little pop up photo exhibition this time last year.  ever since he has expanded our perception of photographic boundaries.  just last month at the bondi pavilion we had the pleasure of screening some beautiful ‘living still’ documentaries compiled of three major collections by dms himself. one being ‘origins’.

when he first told us about origins he said: i was in the projects, warehouses, alleyways, old school battle night clubs, queens, brooklyn, manhattan, all over the shop – gettin in touch with the pulse of hip hop culture in the heartland of its origins.

just got off the skype machine with our beloved photomadman who is currently back in nyc completing stage two of the origins project. he met some drug dealers & apparently they have some interesting connections…

i met the walrus had to say: in 1969, a 14-year-old beatle fanatic named jerry levitan snuck into john lennon’s hotel room in toronto & convinced him to do an interview. 38 years later, levitan, director josh raskin & illustrators james braithwaite & alex kurina have collaborated to create an animated short film using the original interview recording as the soundtrack. a spellbinding vessel for lennon’s boundless wit & timeless message, i met the walrus was nominated for the 2008 academy award for animated short & won the 2009 emmy for ‘new approaches’ (making it the first film to win an emmy on behalf of the internet).
